TEACHING
In addition to making
one-of-a-kind decorative spoons and the Table Tools® utensils, I teach spoonmaking.
I previously taught at craft centers (see below) and found the stimulation
and camaraderie wonderful but, because spoonmaking is such an
idiosyncratic craft, this was a logistical nightmare. Now I teach only in
my own shop (near Syracuse, NY). It is typically a two-day session,
one-on-one, and tailored to the student's level of experience (beginner to
advanced) and interests. All tools and materials are supplied.
I
enjoy teaching because it allows me to introduce people to the joy
of spoonmaking. Teaching provides an opportunity to share more than
32 years of accumulated spoonmaking knowledge.
Some of the places where I
have taught include:
Appalachian
Center for Craft, Smithville, TN
Arrowmont
School of Arts & Crafts Gatlinburg, TN
Brookfield
Craft Center, Brookfield, CT
Peters
Valley Craft Education Center, Layton, NJ
If you are interested in coming here for individual instruction please call (315-638-4749 8AM-8PM Eastern time any day) or e-mail (barry@barrygordon.com).
Three of the articles that I have written for
WOODWORK magazine can be viewed here. One is a general discussion of wood
spoonmaking; another describes European
buckthorn, a small invasive tree that has strong, attractive wood.
A third discusses the seminal American woodworker
Emil Milan.
